Dual Enrollment FAQ

1.What is dual enrollment?
Dual enrollment allows high school students to take college courses at San Bernardino Valley College (SBVC) or Chaffey College while still in high school. Students earn both high school and college credit at the same time.

2. Who is eligible for dual enrollment?
All high school students in grades 9 through 12 are eligible to participate in dual enrollment. Students do not need a high GPA to enroll — many students with varying GPAs have been successful in dual enrollment courses. A counselor will help guide students in selecting courses that best match their strengths and set them up for success.

3. How much does it cost?
Dual enrollment courses are tuition-free for high school students. Some classes may require textbooks, supplies, or materials fees.

4. Where are classes held?
Most dual enrollment classes are offered on the high school campus or online. Specialized courses that require specific equipment, labs, or facilities will be held on the partner college campus.

Students must:
-
Complete the college’s online application through OpenCCC.
-
Submit the Dual Enrollment form online through the Laserfiche system. Please see your College & Career Readiness teacher or high school counselor for guidance on accessing and completing the form.
-
Register for approved courses through the college’s online portal.
6. Do I get both high school and college credit?
Yes. Students earn 3.33 high school credits for every 1 college credit, rounded to the nearest high school credit. The exact number of credits for each course is listed in the REAL Journey Academies Course Catalog.

College Course Unit Conversion
Community College courses completed by the student are worth 3.3 times the credit toward high school graduation requirements. Credit values are rounded up and are converted as follows:
1 unit college course =   3   high school credits
2 unit college course =   7   high school credits
3 unit college course =  10  high school credits
4 unit college course =  13  high school credits
5 unit college course =  17  high school credits

7. Do these credits transfer to other colleges?
Yes. All dual enrollment courses selected by REAL Journey Academies and offered through SBVC and Chaffey College are transferable to California State University (CSU) and University of California (UC) campuses.

To ensure credits count toward a bachelor’s degree, students should complete the CalGETC (California General Education Transfer Curriculum) course sequence or pursue an Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT).

- The full course sequences for both CalGETC and ADT requirements are available in the REAL Journey Academies Course Catalog, as well as the course catalogs for San Bernardino Valley College and Chaffey College.

8. How will dual enrollment affect my high school GPA?

Grades earned in dual enrollment classes appear on both your high school transcript and your college transcript. At REAL Journey Academies, dual enrollment courses are awarded weighted GPA credit. The official conversion chart for the weighted GPA scale is available in the REAL Journey Academies Course Catalog.

9. What support is available for dual enrollment students?
Students in dual enrollment have access to support from both the college and REAL Journey Academies:
- Partner Colleges (SBVC and Chaffey) provide tutoring, counseling, library services, and online resources.
- REAL Journey Academies has College & Career Readiness teachers who monitor students’ grades, guide them through challenges, and provide support to help them succeed.
- REAL Journey Academies also partners with other colleges and universities to provide tutoring in subjects such as math, English, science, business, social sciences, economics, etc.

10. Can I drop or withdraw from a dual enrollment class?
Yes, but students must follow the college’s official withdrawal process and meet deadlines. Failure to drop properly could result in a failing grade on the permanent college transcript.
